Many weight loss and diet pills are sold as natural weight loss pills. This generally refers to something you can purchase without a prescription. These are usually an herbal dietary supplement. Most of these products are developed from combining herbs in combination in the hopes that they will create the desired physiological changes for the person who takes them.

Just because something is labeled natural doesn’t mean it’s always good and safe. Certain herbs could aggravate some health problems. Hypertension or high blood pressure is one health problem some weight loss ingredients are known to aggravate. You can prevent potentially harmful effects by educating yourself on which ones these are and avoiding them.

Weight loss pills can be broken down into a few broad categories that either help you to reduce your energy intake or help you increase your energy use. Each category focuses on a specific physiological or body function. By understanding what these products do, then you have a better chance of getting something that will aid your weight loss efforts. Plus, you can avoid products that probably won’t help you.

Categories of natural weight loss pills

  • Appetite suppressants decreases the appetite so you eat less. Appetite suppressants reduce hunger by changing neurotransmitter levels. Hoodia gordonii is one example.
  • Stimulants increase metabolism to burn more calories. Some examples are: White willow bark, Yerba mate, Guarana, Green tea and other thermogenic herbs.
  • Diuretics cause the body to excrete water through excess urine. Dandelion is such an herb.
  • Cathartics or laxatives cause evacuation of the bowels, reduce calorie consumption by impeding full digestion. Cascara sagrada, bisacodyl, senna, magnesium hydroxide, and magnesium citrate fall into this category. Oral aloe produces a strong cathartic response.
  • Fibers absorb water and make the stomach feel more full. Psyllium and guar gum are examples of this kind of weight loss herb.
  • Fat absorbers such as chitosan and Proactol. Chitosan supposedly binds to fat in the stomach and intestines and excretes it.
  • Starch blockers such as white kidney bean extract that blocks carbohydrate metabolism. Many studies have shown that white kidney bean interrupts the digestive process that converts starch to sugar.
  • Mood lifters, such as St. John’s wort herb seems to increase serotonin levels in the brain and suppress appetite, thereby reducing depression-related overeating.
